MEET THE ARTIST: NIGEL COOKE

This September, our featured artist is the incredible Nigel Cooke. One of the UK’s most popular artists, Nigel is known across the contemporary art scene for exuberant cityscapes that feature his favourite places from around the world. He has been one of Watson Gallery’s most sought-after artists for years, and we love showcasing his unique takes on our own home city of Edinburgh, as well as his international offering, on our walls.

Nigel took an unusual route to becoming a full-time artist, starting his career as a resident caricaturist and entertainer for Butlins holiday camp. This expanded to his opening caricature concessions at venues including Blackpool’s Central Pier, the Trafford Centre and Alton Towers; Nigel later worked as a a character designer in Hong Kong and spent years travelling the world as a caricature artist. 

Drawing on these experiences, Nigel later turned his distinctive illustrative style towards cityscapes, developing the dynamic, layered and highly recognisable paintings that have earned him an international following.
