POPKAPI

Jakkrit Chewapanya, known by his artist moniker Popkapi, brings his multidisciplinary art to life with playful twists and powerful imagery. His layered style encompasses many techniques across various contemporary art disciplines, from pop art to tribal art, painting to stencils.

Popkapi was born in 1980 in Bangkok, Thailand, and credits much of his development as an artist to the influences of his family, such as his father’s encouragement to study at fine arts college. He has also mentioned his grandmother’s naughty sense of humour, which he enjoyed growing up, and which now impacts his playful work. Continuing his sensitivity to generational links, Popkai’s most recent artworks have been inspired by his children.

Speaking about his portraits, Popkapi has said he wants to enjoy making his figures appear ‘strange’ and to ‘let the audiences wonder’ at their appearance and characteristics.

“They are unexplainable, they are just my emotional pieces of work… [I] am beyond making a boundary for my works. I do not want to set a rule for them. I think I want my paintings to tell their own stories by themselves.”

The name ‘Popkapi’ is  the name that Jakkrit adopted when he first moved into working as an artist permanently, after balancing salary work and being a freelance artist for years. He now creates paintings, sculpture, and graphic design full-time.
